Heartbreaking to find plastic pieces in sea bird nests in Con Dao archipelago
In our recent field trip to Con Dao archipelago, we were lucky enough to visit Hon Trung islet, where many beautiful species of sea bird (Black-naped Tern, Brown Noddy, Bridled Tern, Brown Booby) live. We were so amazed to see hundreds of them flying around the islet.
Unfortunately, after observing a nest of a Brown Noddy pair, we found small pieces of plastic waste (mainly plastic wires) mixed with other natural materials. This is not safe for the chicks since they can get entangled which hinders them from flying or developing their body parts. In the worst scenario, they might suffocate if the plastic wires become too tight.
What we share may not be new to somebody, but we hope it makes us realize how plastic waste is impacting nature.
