Integrated training program on enhancing capacity for Marine Protected Areas and National Parks in Viet Nam

Program overview

Integrated training program on enhancing capacity for marine protected areas (MPAs) network/National parks (NPs) in Vietnam was held in Mũi Né, Phan Thiết, Bình Thuận from May 15th to 18th. IUCN Vietnam organized the program with the Vietnam Directorate of Fisheries, Vietnam Fisheries Surveillance, Vietnam fisheries Society (VINAFIS), UNDP (United Nations Development Programme), SGP (The GEF Small Grants Programme), BIOFIN (The Biodiversity Finance Initiative), WWF-Vietnam, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) and Greenhub (Centre for Supporting Green Development).

Training content

Representatives from MPAs, NPs, IUCN, WWF, Green Hub, UNDP, SGP, VINAFIS, the local department of fisheries, management agencies, and experts in marine conservation participated in the training, which focused on discussing important issues:
  • Summary of 5 years of Beach and Coral Reef Plastic Waste Monitoring Program.
  • MPAs network – Enhance Capacity for Marine Protected Areas
  • Status of bycatch in Vietnam
  • Bycatch Data Collection Guidelines
  • Communities and Businesses Participate in Marine Conservation Activities.
  • Sustainable Financing for MPAs and NPs with Marine Components.
  • Training on Rescue Activities for MPAs representatives and Local Department of Fisheries staff.

CBES partners with IUCN

CBES was delighted to collaborate with IUCN in sharing and introducing an overview of bycatch; Introduced the bycatch prediction tool and the bycatch database under development; offered instructions for collecting bycatch data using smartphone applications; and explained basic rescue steps for encountering bycatch species in Hon Cau.

Through the joint efforts of all parties involved, this training program is expected to improve capacity, promote effective management, and encourage sustainable resources use within MPAs and NPs. It will also contribute to bycatch reduction and ultimately, the effective protection of Vietnam’s marine biodiversity.
